Natural Selection and Evolution
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Natural Selection | A process in which individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than other individuals because of those traits. |
| Adaptation | A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce |
| Population | a group of organisms of the same species living in a specific geographical area |
| Gene | A segment of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a specific trait |
| DNA | A complex molecule containing the genetic information that makes up the chromosomes. |
| Species | A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
| Mutation | A random change in a gene or chromosome. |
| Mimicry | Ability of an animal to look like another more harmful animal |
| Genetics | The scientific study of heredity |
| Evolution | Change in a kind of organism over time; process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms. |
| Camouflage | the act of concealing the identity of something by modifying its appearance |
| Artificial Selection | Breeding organisms with specific traits in order to produce offspring with identical traits. |
| GMOs | Breeding organisms with specific traits in order to produce offspring with identical traits. |
| Trait | A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes. |
| Variations | Any difference between individuals of the same species. |
| Darwin | English natural scientist who formulated a theory of evolution by natural selection (1809-1882) |
| HMS Beagle | The ship Charles Darwin sailed on |
| Heredity | Passing of traits from parents to offspring |
| Fossil | A trace of an ancient organism that has been preserved in rock. |
| Embryology | The branch of biology that studies embryos and their development. |
| Biogeography | Geographic distribution of species. |
| Anatomy | The study of body structure |
| Survival of the Fittest | Another phrase for natural selection |
| Homologous structures | Structures in different species that are similar because of common ancestry. |
| Vestigial structures | A structure that is present in an organism but no longer serves its original purpose |
| Structural Adaptations | a physical feature of an organism's body having a specific function that contributes to the survival of the organism |
| Functional Adaptations | Biological changes that occur during an individual's lifetime, increasing the individual's fitness in the given environment |
| Behavioral Adaptations | The way an animal ACTS in order to survive |
