different types of joints and their functions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Gliding joint | One bone slides over another. example, carpals, tarsals |
| Ball and Socket joint | Bone has a smooth head that fits into the cup-like structure of another |
| Pivot Joint | One bone rotates in a ring of another bone that does not move. Examples, head and neck; forearms and Neck |
| Hinge joint | Allows back and forth movement; knees, Elbows, fingers, toes |
| Immovable joints | Allows little or no movement; Cranium and Sternum |
| Cartilaginous joints | Separate the vertebrae in the vertebrae column; slightly movable |
| synovial joints | Make up a majority of joints in the body and allows for free movement |
| Ligaments | link bones together and limit the range of movement of the joint |
| Tendons | Provides place for muscle to connect to bone |
| condylar | Joints that can move in two different planes at once (bend, straighten, and move side to side). Examples, knees, elbows, jaw |
