| sun | The energy source or power of the water cycle. |
| condensation | The process of water vapor turning from a gas back to a liquid or solid form. |
| precipitation | Any form of water that falls from a cloud back to Earth in a form of rain, snow, sleet or hail. |
| run-off | Precipitation that travels over land, lakes, rivers, streams, in the ground, and eventually back to the ocean. |
| water cycle | The circulating of water moving from the ocean, to the atmosphere and back to Earth. |
| evaporation | The process of water turning from a liquid into a gas or vapor. |
| water vapor | The gas state of water. |
| rain | Water that falls from a cloud. |
| sleet | Frozen rain that usually forms in the winter. |
| hail | Huge balls of ice that usually form in the summer in thunderstorms. |
| snow | Frozen water vapor that forms in the winter and has six sides. |
| weather | The condition of the atmosphere at a certain time and place. |
| weather vane | An instrument that measures wind direction. |
| anemometer | An instrument that measures wind speed. |
| barometer | An instrument that measures air pressure. |
| rain gauge | An instrument that measures precipitation. |
| thermometer | An instrument that measures temperature. |
| cumulus | puffy, white clouds that mean fair weather |
| stratus | a low cloud that looks like a gray blanket and blocks the sun and usually brings rain |
| cirrus | high clouds made of ice crystals the mean a change in weather |
| cumulonimbus | a towering cloud that brings heavy rain and thunderstorms |
| humidiy | the amount of water vapor in the air |
| nimbus | means rain |
| air pressure | The weight of air in an area. |
| high pressure | Usually means good weather. |
| low pressure | Usually means bad or stormy weather. |
| wind | The movement of air caused by differences in air pressure. |
| cold front | A cold air mass moves into a warm air mass and causes a thunderstorm. |
| warm front | A warm air mass rises above a cold air mass and creates days of rain. |
| stationary front | When a cold and warm air mass meet but neither has enough energy to push the other out. |
| meteorologist | A scientist who studies weather. |
| climate | A places weather pattern over a long period of time. |
| polar zone | A cold climate near the poles. |
| tropical zone | A warm climate near the equator. |
| temperate zone | A mild climate between the equator and poles. |
| sea breeze | A breeze created by a difference in the land and water temperatures. |
| prevailing westerlies | Global winds responsible for most of the local weather in North Carolina. |
