Caring for People With Mental Illness

Nail biting, overeating, smoking, & abusing drugs or alcohol Negative coping mechanisms
Methods of dealing with stress that "just happen"..Helps protect the person from emotionally traumatic events Defense mechanisms
Compensation To make up for a loss by filling in or substituting something else
Conversion Changing one thing into another
Denial Refusing to believe something that is true
Displacement Shifting an emotion from one person to another who is less threatening
Projection Blaming someone else for your own uncomfortable or unacceptable actions or feelings
Rationalization Making excuses or creating acceptable reasons for poor behaviors or actions
Regression Slipping to an earlier stage of development when faced with stress
Repression Pushing to the unconscious painful or hurtful thoughts and memories
