| Cartilage | A connective tissue that is more flexible than bone that protects the ends of bones and keeps them from rubbing together. |
| Mammary gland | An organ in female mammals that produces milk for the mammal's young. |
| Monotreme | A mammal that lays eggs. |
| Marsupial | A mammal whose young are born at an early stage of development, and which continue to develop in a pouch on their mother's body. |
| Placental mammal | A mammal that develops inside its mother's body until its body systems function independently. |
| Placenta | An organ in most pregnant mammals, including humans, that links the mother and the developing embryo and allows for a passage of materials between them. |
| What are the five main groups of vertebrates? | Fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. |
| What are the characteristics of a fish? | Lives in water, and use fins to move. Most are ectotherms. Have scales and use gills to obtain oxygen. |
| What are the characteristics of an amphibian? | Ectothermic. Spends early life in water, and adult life on land. |
| What are the characteristics of a reptile? | Ectothermic. Has scaly skin and lungs. Lays eggs on land. |
| What are the characteristics of a bird? | Endothermic. Lays eggs. has four chambered heat. Most can fly. Lightweight. Bones are nearly hollow. |
| What are the characteristics of a mammal? | Endothermic. Have skin covered in fur or hair. Has four chambered heart. Young are fed milk. |
