Chapter 4 Lesson 3
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Exoskeleton | External skeleton: a tough waterproof outer covering that protects, supports, and helps prevent evaporation of water from the body of many invertebrates. |
| Endoskeleton | An internal skeleton: structural support system within the body of an animal. |
| What is the definition of an invertebrate? | An animal without a backbone. |
| What are the eight groups of invertebrates? | Sponges, cnidarians, flatworms, roundworms, segmented worms, mollusks, athropods, and echinoderms. |
| What are the characteristics of a sponge? | Are asymmetrical invertebrates. Have specialized cells but no tissues or organs. Stay in one place. Get energy from food. |
| What are the characteristics of a cnidarian? | Have stinging cells. take food into central body cavity. Have radial symmetry. Lack organs, but have tissues. |
| What are the characteristics of a flatworm? | Have symmetry. Have head and tail ends. Have tissues, organs, and organ systems. Have flat, soft bodies. |
| What are the characteristics of a roundworm? | Have symmetry. Have head and tail ends. Have tissues, organs, and organ systems. Look like smooth tubes. Have a mouth and anus. |
| What are the characteristics of a segmented worm? | Have symmetry. Have head and tail ends. Have tissues, organs, and organ systems. Made of many linked sections called segments. Simplest animals with brain to detect food and predators. |
| What are the characteristics of a mollusk? | Has a thin layer of tissue called a mantle which covers internal organs. Has a "foot." Foot can be used for: crawling, digging, or catching prey. |
| What are the characteristics of a athropod? | Have hard exoskeletons, segmented bodies, and pairs of jointed appendages. |
| What are the characteristics of a echinoderm? | Has an endoskeleton and has a system of fluid tubes. |
