Lesions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Macule | A color change, flat and circumscribed, less than 1cm |
| Patch | Macules greater than 1cm |
| Nodule | Solid elevated, hard or soft spot. May extend deeper into dermis. Greater than 1cm. |
| Tumor | Larger than a few centimeters in diameter. Firm or soft. Deeper into dermis. Benign or malignant. |
| Papule | Superficial thickening in epidermis, elevated. Less than 1cm |
| Plaque | Papule coalesce to form surface elevation wider than 1cm. Plateau like disc shaped lesion. |
| Wheal | Superficial, raised, transient, erythematous slightl irregular shape from edema |
| Urticaria | Wheals coalesce to form extensive reaction, intensely pruritic |
| Vesicle | Elevated cavity containing free fluid. Less than 1cm Clear serum flows if wall is ruptured |
| Bulla | Larger than 1cm. Unilocular chamber. Superficial in epidermis. Thin-walled and ruptures easily |
| Cyst | Encapsulated fluid-filled cavity in dermis or subcutaneous layer. Tensely elevating skin. |
| Pustule | Turbid fluid in cavity, circumscribed and elevated |
| Crust | Thickened, dried-out exudate left when vesicles/pustules burst or dry up. |
| Scale | Compact, desiccated flakes of skin, dry or greasy, silvery or white, from shedding of dead excess keratin cells. |
| Fissure | Linear crack with abrupt edges, extends into dermis. |
| Erosion | Scooped-out but shallow depression. Superficial, epidermis loss. Heals without scar |
| Ulcer | Deeper depression extending into dermis. Irregular shape. Leaves scar. |
| Scar | After a skin lesion is repaired, normal tissue is lost and replaced with connective tissue. |
| Atrophic Scar | Resulting skin level is depressed with loss of tissue, a thing epidermis |
| Lichenification | Prolonged, intense scratching eventually thickens skin and produces tight,y packed set of papule. Moss like |
| Keloid | Benign excess of scar tissue beyond site original injury. |
| Excoriation | Self-inflicted abrasion, superficial, can be crusted |
| Petechiae | Tiny punctuate hemorrhage. 1-3mm. Non-blanchable |
| Purpura | Confluence/extensive patch of petechiae and ecchymosis. Greater than 3mm |
| Ecchymosis | Purple patch, extravasating of bloom in skin. Greater than 3mm |
