CISD 5th Matter
5th Grade Matter Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| triple beam balance | tool that is used to measure the mass of an object |
| Magnetism | the ability of matter to attract to a MAGNET |
| solubility | the ability to DISSOLVE in a liquid |
| electrical conductor | material that ALLOWS the flow of electricity |
| electrical insulator | material that STOPS or SLOWS downs the flow of electricity |
| relative density | how dense a substance is compared to water; The deeper it is, the more density it has. So if it sinks, it is more dense. If it floats, it is less dense. |
| What are the 3 PHYSICAL states of matter? | Solid, liquid, and gas |
| solid | 1 of the 3 states of matter; particles are tightly packed definite shape and definite volume |
| liquid | 1 of the 3 states of matter; particles can move since they are not as tight as in solids; take the shape of any container; INDEFINITE shape and DEFINITE volume |
| gas | 1 of the 3 states of matter; particles move freely; INDEFINITE shape and INDEFINITE volume |
| matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Physical Properties | Characteristics of a substance that can be observed and measured without changing the substance into something else (color, length, height, weight, mass, hardness, taste, conduct heat, conduct sound, conduct electricity, magnetism). |
| How do you measure the mass of an object? | Using a triple beam balance; measured in grams |
| weight | the measure of the pull of gravity of an object |
| volume | the amount of SPACE that an object takes up |
| density | the concentration (compactness) of matter in an object. |
| Name some examples of electrical insulators. | Glass Porcelain Plastic Rubber |
| Name some examples of electrical conductors | Copper Aluminum Platinum Gold Silver Water |
| mixture | a combination of two or more ingredients or substances |
| solution | a mixture of two ingredients or substances in which one dissolves in the other; the materials can be difficult to separate. |
| definite | stays the same |
| indefinite | does not stay the same; changes |
| If a substance floats in water, it is ________ dense than water. | less |
| If a substance sinks in water, it is ________ dense than water. | more |
