Homeostasis The process by which living organisms maintain a stable internal environment, despite changes in external conditions.
Circulatory Relating to the system that circulates blood and lymph through the body, consisting of the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
Respiratory Pertaining to the system involved in the exchange of gases, primarily oxygen and carbon dioxide, in the lungs and throughout the body.
Digestive Related to the processes by which food is broken down into smaller components that can be absorbed and utilized by the body.
Musculoskeletal Referring to the organ system that enables humans and other animals to move using the muscular and skeletal systems.
Nervous Concerning the system that transmits signals between different parts of the body, responsible for controlling and coordinating bodily functions.
Endocrine Related to the system that produces hormones, which regulate various bodily functions such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction.
Immune Pertaining to the system that protects the body against disease and foreign invaders, including pathogens like bacteria and viruses.
Integumentary Related to the system that includes the skin, hair, nails, and associated glands, serving as a barrier to protect the body.
Lymphatic Referring to the system involved in the transport of lymph, a fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout the body.
Cardiovascular Relating to the heart and blood vessels, and the system responsible for circulating blood throughout the body.
Skeletal Pertaining to the framework of bones and cartilage that support and protect the body’s organs.
Metabolism The set of life-sustaining chemical reactions in organisms that convert food into energy and building blocks for growth and repair.
Neurotransmitter A chemical messenger that transmits signals across a synapse from one neuron to another, playing a critical role in the nervous system.
Reproductive Related to the system involved in producing offspring and ensuring the continuation of a species.
