Cell Components

Compnents of a Cell

QuestionAnswer
Cell Membrane (function) Maintains shape of cell and controls passage of materials into and out of the cell.
Cell Membrane (Composition) Composed of primarily of proteins and lipids.
Cytoplasm A semi fluid substance forming hte foundation of the cell. It is the site of metabolic reactions. Contians organells
Cytoskeleton An interconnected system of fibers, threads and interwoven molecules giving structure to the cell.
Cytoskeleton (composition) Micro tubules, Micro filaments and intermediate filaments. All components are assembled from subunits of protien.
Mitochondria (function) To produce Adenosine Triphosophate (ATP) by convering CHO/Lipids/Proteins Energy is released when ATP breaks down
Endoplasmic Reticulum (composition) A series of membranes extending throughout the cytoplasm of the cell.
Endoplasmic Reticulum (function) Protein synthesis, membrane synthesis
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Contains ribosomes Functions to synthesize and transport proteins
Ribosomes (composition and function) Particles composed of protein and RNA Functions to synthesize and ransport protiens
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum No ribosomes Functions to synthesize CHO and Lipids
Golgi Apparatus Group of Flattned Membranous sacs, stacked on one another called Cisterns
Cisterns A group of flattned membranous sacs, stacked on one another.
Golgi Apparatus (Function) Process, sort and deliver proteins and lipids for secretion or transport to other organelles
Lysosomes (function and composition) Membranous sacs Contains enzymes formed in the Golgi apparatus and is used in intracellular digestion to break down nutrients or foreign particles. Can destroy organelles or vesicles, resulting in recycling substances or expelled.
What are Lysosomes important in the destruction of? Worn out cellular parts
Peroxisomes (functions) Detoxify substances that are produced by the cell Protets the cell from its own toxic biproducts
Micro villi (Components) Fingerlike extensions of the plasma membrane that project from the cell's surface. They increase the surface area of the plasma membrane.
Micro Villi (Function) Found on the surfaces of absorption cells such as intestinal and kidney tubal cells.
Cillia (description and function) Tubules which project form the cell membrane and move together in one motion. Functions to propel fluid over the surface of the cell. Eg: ciliatred cells propel mucus laden dust particles / bacteria out of hte lungs.
Flagellum Single large projection which functions to move the cell in surrounding fluid. EG sperm tail
Nucleus the brain of the cell functions to control the actions of the cell Contains DNA Prokaryotes = no nucleous eg: bacteria Eukaroytes = have nucleous eg: plants, animals and humans.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
