QuestionAnswer
What is polyploid? More than two sets of homologous chromosomes.
What is diploid? 2 copies of cells (2N) Found in somatic cells.
What is haploid? 1 copy of cells (N) Found in gamete cells.
What is chromatin? Chromatin is made of DNA and protein. Chromatids are made of compact chromatin
What is a chromatid? one strand (half of the X) of a chromosome.
What is sister chromatid? Made of long strings of DNA. One chromatin replicates into 2 sister (homologous) chromatin.
What is a centromere? The middle connector piece of a chromosome. Holds the chromatids together.
What is a chromosome? Package of DNA. A chromosome is made of 2 sister chromatids, and a centromere.
What is a single stranded chromosome? Contains only ONE chromatid.
What is a double stranded chromosome? Contains TWO chromatid (X shape)
What is Cytokenisis? The LAST part of cell division, starts during telophase; other organelles for the cell are created during this phase.
What is crossing over? When two homologous chromosomes switch sections of DNA resulting in variation in genes (eye colour, hair colour, ect)
What is a tetrad? When 2 homologous chromosomes line up on top of each other to undergo crossing over.
What does homologous mean? 2 chromosomes or chromatid, roughly the same size and storing the same DNA information.
What does synapse mean? The process of 2 homologous chromosomes forming a tetrad.
What type of cells are somatic? Body cells
What type of cells are gamete? Sex cells
Where are somatic cells found/created? Anywhere in your body
Where are gamete cells found/created? In ovaries/testes
What is the purpose of somatic cells? Growth, repair, + maintenence of the body
What is the purpose of gamete cells? Reproduction
How many daughter cells do somatic cells create? 2 daughter cells.
How many daughter cells do gamete cells create? 4 daughter cells.
Do somatic cells use mitosis or meiosis? Mitosis.
Do gamete cells use mitosis or meiosis? Meiosis.
What is 2N? 2 copies of each chromosome in every cell. This is found in diploid (somatic) cells.
What is N? 1 copy of each chromosome in every cell. This is found in haploid (gamete) cells.
What are the 3 parts of cell theory? 1. All organisms are made of one or more cells. 2. All cells are created from preexisting cells. 3. The cell is the structural unit essential for life.
What is PMAT? P - prophase M - metaphase A - anaphase T - telaphase
How many divisions occurs within meiosis? 2 sets (2 sets of PMAT)
How many divisions occurs within mitosis? 1 set (1 set of PMAT)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
