S/E of Diphenhydramine HCl? daytime sedation, anticholinergic toxicity
Dose of melatonin? 2-5mg 2-3h before HS x 8wks
3 Counselling points of Melatonin? Take drug at the same time each night, Use IR dosage form for difficulty FALLING asleep, Use ER dosage form for difficulty STAYING asleep
Onset of Melatonin? Peaks at 20 minutes
3 CI’s of melatonin? Pregnancy, breastfeeding, attempting to get pregnant
4 S/E of Melatonin? Dizz, drows, nausea, headache
Dose of Valerian? Not recommended due to lack of efficacy
2 Counseling points of Valerian? Do not stop suddenly if used chronically, slowly taper to avoid withdrawal syndrome
2 CI’s of valerian? Pregnancy and lactation
2 S/E of Valerian? diarrhea, WD effect if abruptly stopped
Dose of caffeine? 100mg-200mg q 3-4h PRN
Counselling points of caffeine? Avoid use before sleep, Avoid taking with weight loss supplements or energy drinks (too much caff.), Avoid if history of anxiety, agitation or tremor, Use w/ caution if history of PUD &/or GERD
Onset of Caffeine? 30-75 min
4 CI’s of caffeine? MOAI’s, CAD, uncontrolled HT, preexisting arrhythmias
3 S/E of caffeine? sleep interference, agitation in high doses, transient increase in HR & BP
