Weather Vocab

A stack to help you study/learn about weather.

TermDefinition
air mass a body of air extending over a large area that develops and retains specific characteristics of pressure, temperature and humidity
atmospheric pressure (air pressure) the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to Earth
cold front the border between an advancing cold air mass and a retreating warm air mass
global winds winds that act as a heat transfer system due to the unequal heating of Earth’s surface
high pressure system Occurs when the atmospheric pressure at the surface of the Earth is GREATER than the surrounding environment Clear skies, light breeze, sunshine
humidity the amount of water vapor in the air
jet stream narrow bands of strong wind that generally blow from west to east across the globe
low pressure system Occurs when the atmospheric pressure at the surface of the Earth is LOWER than the surrounding environment. Overcast skies, strong winds, thunderstorms
regional geography the study of specific regions of Earth
relative humidity the measure of the actual amount of water vapor in the air
stationary front this occurs when 2 air masses are pushing against each other but neither is powerful enough to move the other
temperature a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance
thunderstorm a rain bearing cloud that also produces lightning
warm front when a warm air mass pushes into a cooler air mass
weather conditions the regional weather during a defined period of time
wind direction the direction from which the wind is blowing at a given location
