Fossil Vocab Quiz

TermDefinition
Fossil Preserved remains or traces of ancient plant and animal life.
Trace Fossils Impression or other preserved signs of activity such as feeding, scratching, burrowing, walking, or resting.
Body Fossils Preserved remains of the plant or animal itself, preserved parts such as bones, teeth or pieces of the animal/plant.
Mold Fossils Hollow space left in a rock by animal activity such as burrowing, walking, or resting
Cast Fossils When a mold fills in with minerals of sediment and hardens
Permineralization Groundwater fills pore spaces in animal or plant remains. Most Dinosaur Fossils are like this.
Strata Layers of sedimentary rock that compile and compress over time.
Transitional Fossil A fossil that provides evidence for animals living in transitional periods from water to land.
Evolution Evidence that organisms have changed over long periods of time.
Paleontologist A scientist that studies fossil records better to understand better life on Earth.
