Abiotic Factor A nonliving thing that affects the ecosystem
Aquifer An area of permeable rock underground that holds or transmits groundwater; pumps are used to retrieve water from these areas
Biotic Factor A living thing that affects the ecosystem
Drainage Divide A geographical barrier, such as a ridge, hill, or mountain, separating one watershed land area from another
Estuary The boundary between freshwater rivers and streams and the saltwater ocean
Groundwater Water that collects in cracks and pores in underground soil and rock layers
Nonpoint Source Water Pollution Pollutants introduced into surface water or groundwater that are without a specific source location, such as water flowing over a lawn that has been fertilized and then into a drain
Point Source Water Pollution A single identifiable and localized source of water pollution, such as wastewater discharge into a stream
Permeable Rock Rock or rocky material that water can flow through
Saturation Zone Area below the water table where all spaces not filled with solid material fill with water
Subsidence Sinking of land surface due to underlying compression of Earth material as a result of the removal of groundwater
Water Table The top of the saturation zone, below which water fills all open spaces between the rock
Watershed An area of land where the surface water and groundwater drain into a particular body of water; separated from other watersheds by drainage divides
