satelite An object that orbits a planet
planet An object that orbits a star, is large enough to become rounded by it's own gravity, and has cleared the area of its orbit
meteor A streak of light produced in the sky by the burning of a meteoroid in Earths atmosphere
comet A loose collection of ice and dust that orbits the sun, typically in a long narrow orbit
star A ball of hot gas, primarily oxygen and helium that undergoes nuclear fusion
constellation A pattern or grouping of stars that people imagine to represent a person or object

axis A imaginary line that goes through the center of a planet and it's north and south poles about which it rotates.
rotation The spinning motion of a planet on it's axis
revolution The movement of an object around another object
orbit The path of an object as it revolves around another object in space
calendar A system of organizing the time that defines the beginning length and divisions of a year
solstice Either of the two days where the sun reaches its greatest distance from the north or south pole
equinox Either of the two days of the year on which neither hemisphere is tilted away from the sun

force A push or a pull exerted on an object
gravity The attractive force between objects
law of universal gravitation The scientific law that states that every object attracts all other objects
mass The amount of matter in an object
weight The measure of the force of gravity on an object
inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in movement
Newtons first law of motion The scientific law that states that every object that rests will stay rested and every object in motion will stay in motion with a constant speed.

phase One of the different shapes of the moon seen from earth
eclipse The partial of total blocking of an object by another object in space
solar eclipse When the moon blocks the sunlight completely from earth
umbra The darkest part of a shadow
penumbra The shadow surrounding the darkest part
lunar eclipse When the earth blocks the sunlight from the moon

tide The periodic rise and fall of water in the ocean
spring tide The tide with the greatest difference between the consecutive high and low tides
neap tide The tide with the least difference between the consecutive high and low tides
Lesson 6 Lesson 6
maria Dark flat areas on the moon formed from huge ancient lava flows
crater A large pit caused by an impact of a meteoroid
meteoroid A chunk of rock or dust in space usually smaller than an asteroid
