Succession
8th Grade Unit 20
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ecosystem | a community of living organisms (like plants and animals) interacting with their non-living environment (like water, soil, and sunlight) within a specific area, where everything depends on each other to survive |
| Ecological Disturbance | a sudden event, like a wildfire that significantly alters the structure and composition of an ecosystem by disrupting the normal balance of organisms within it, often causing temporary changes to the environment and impacting the populations present there |
| Primary Succession | the process where a community of plants and animals first colonize a completely barren area, like newly exposed rock or volcanic lava, where no soil previously existed, gradually building an ecosystem from scratch over time |
| Secondary Succession | the process by which an ecosystem renews itself after a disturbance. It occurs when a previously inhabited area is damaged, but the soil and nutrients remain. |
| Pioneer Species | the first organisms to colonize a new environment or repopulate a disturbed area |
| Species Diversity | the variety of different species present in a particular area, including not only the number of species but also how abundant each species is within that area |
| Climax Community | a stable community of plants, animals, and fungi that has reached a state of ecological equilibrium within a specific climate and geography |
| Ecological Succession | the gradual change in a community of living organisms over time, where one group of species replaces another, usually following a disturbance like a fire or a new land exposure, until a stable "climax" community is reached |
