| Scientific Investigation | the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation |
| Research | the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. |
| Observation | a remark, statement, or comment based on something one has seen, heard, or noticed. |
| Inference | educated guess |
| Hypothesis | an idea or explanation that you then test through study and experimentation |
| Experiment | a scientific test in which you perform a series of actions and carefully observe their effects in order to learn about something |
| Independent Variable | the factor in an experiment that a researcher actively changes or manipulates to observe its effect on another variable ( the thing that changes) |
| Dependent Variable | something that depends on other factors ( what the independent variable causes to change) |
| Controlled Variable | any variable that's held constant in a research study (anything that doesn't change) |
| Control | an element that remains unchanged or unaffected by other variables ( is not affected by the independent variable |
| Data | facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis. |
| Conclusion | a statement summarizing the results of an experiment, |
| Analyze | to study or determine the nature and relationship of the parts of something |
