What are the metric system units for length? Meters, centimeters, millimeters, and kilometers.
What are the metric system units for mass? Grams, kilograms, milligrams, and tons.
What are the metric system units for volume? Liters, milliliters, and cubic centimeters.
What is the metric system unit for temperature? Degrees celcius.
What are the parts of the atom? Protons, neutrons, electrons, and the nucleus.
Where is the nucleus in an atom? In the center.
Where are the electrons in an atom? Surrounding the nucleus.
When are ions formed? When an atom gains or loses an electron.
What electrons are the only ones involved in being transferred in or out, or shared-involved in bonding? Valence electrons.
What are the two types of bonds? Ionic and covalent.
How is an ionic bond formed? When one or more electrons are transformed from one atom to another.
how is a covalent bond formed? When electrons are shared between atoms.
What happens during a chemical reaction? Bonds are broken and new bonds are formes.
How do you get a positive ion? When an atom loses an electron.
How do you get a negative ion? When an atom gains an electron.
What is a mixture? A material composecd of two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed together but not chemically combined.
What is a solution? An evenly distributed mixture.
What is a suspension? A mixture of non-dissolved material and water.
What is a compound? A substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in definite proportions.
What is an element? A substance that consists of entirly one type of atom.
What is an isotope? Atoms of the same element that differ in the number of neutrons they contain.
What is a solute? The substance that is dissolved.
What is a solvent? The substance in which the solute dissolves.
What is the most abundant compound in living things? Water
What is a compound light microscope? A microscope that allows light to pass through the specimen and uses two lenses to form an image.
What is an electron microscope? A microscope that uses beams of electrons to form an image.
How many variables are tested at a time in a controlled experiment? One
What is the dependant variable? Factor that changes.
Where is the dependant variable located on a graph? On the y-axis.
What is the independant variable? Factor that stays the same.
Where is the independant variable located on a graph? On the x-axis.
What are the 8 characteristics of living things? Made of cells, reproduce, based on universal genetic code, grow and develop, obtain and use materials and energy, respond to environment, mantain stable internal environment, and aas a group change over time.
What is the charge of a neutron? Neutral.
What is the charge of a proton? Positive.
What is the charge of an electron? Negative.
What forms can chemical reactions release energy? Light, sound, heat.
What is an ion? Positive or negative charged atom.
What is an enzyme? Protein that acts as a biological catalyst.
What is a catalyst? Substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction.
Where is a reactant located? Entering into a chemical reaction.
Where is a product located? Produced by a chemical reaction.
What is a monosaccharide? Single sugar molecules.
What is a polysaccharide? Large molecules formed from monosaccharides.
What is activation energy? Energy needed for a chemical reaction.
What is the main source of energy for living things? Carbohydrates.
What is an ecosystem? Community and its nonliving surrpoundings.
What is a population? Group of organisms of one type that live in the same area.
What is a biosphere? The part of the earth that contains all ecosystems.
What is cell fractionation? Technique of seperating cells into different parts.
What chemical bond is the weakest? Hydrogen bond.
What is the strongest chemical bond? Ionic bond.
What is an acid? A compound that forms from hydrogen ions in a solution.
What is a base? A compound that produces hydroxide ions in a solution.
What does a chemical reaction change? Composition.
Does a physical reaction change composition? No.
What are macromolecules? Giant molecules.
What are the two types of macromolecules? Monomers and polymers.
What is an atom? Basic unit of matter.
What does saturated mean? When fatty acids contain the max number of hydrogen atoms.
What does unsaturated mean? When there is at least one carbon-carbon double bond in a fatty acid.
What is the hypothesis? Possible answer to a scientific question.
What are the two types of variables? Independant and dependent.
What is the conclusion? Answer to wether the hypothesis is correct or not.
What is a theory? A well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations.
What did Redi test? Spontaneous generation.
What was Redi's experiment? Flies, meat and gauze.
What was Needham's experiment? Gravy.
What was Spallanzani's eperiment? Gravy.
What are enzymes made of? Proteins.
What is quantitative data? Numbers, obtained by counting or measuring.
What is qualitative data? Descriptive and involves characteristics, can't be counted.
