Cell Organelles

TermDefinition
Cells The basic building blocks of all living things.
Mitochondria The part of the cell that makes energy from food (the "powerhouse" of the cell).
Structure How something is built or put together.
Function What something does or its job.
Cytoplasm The jelly-like substance inside the cell that holds the organelles and helps them move.
Ribosome Tiny parts of the cell that make proteins.
Cell Wall A strong outer layer in plant cells that gives the cell shape and protection.
Nucleus The control center of the cell that holds DNA and tells the cell what to do.
Vacuole A storage space in the cell that holds water, nutrients, or waste.
Cell Membrane A thin layer that surrounds the cell and controls what goes in and out.
Chloroplast The part of a plant cell that uses sunlight to make food (photosynthesis).
