Types of Weathering

TermDefinition
Weathering the process that breaks down rock and other substances of Earth's surface
Erosion removal or MOVING of rock particles by wind, water, ice or gravity
Deposition dropping or depositing of material in new places
What are the two kinds of Weathering? Mechanical Weather and Chemical Weathering
Mechanical Weathering rock is physically broken down into smaller pieces by various processes
Four Processes of Mechanical Weathering Abrasion, Freezing & Thawing, Animal Actions, Plant Growth
Abrasion rock particles wear away rock
Freezing & Thawing breaks rock by ice wedging
Ice wedging water expands when it freezes and acts as a wedge, slowly expanding rocks until pieces break off
Animal Actions Ground breaks away by animals burrowing
Plant Growth Roots grow into cracks of rocks and pry them apart
Chemical Weathering process that breaks down rocks through chemical changes
Four processes of Chemical Weathering Acid Rain, Carbonic Acid, Living Organisms, Oxygen
Acid Rain Results from burning fossil fuels causing minerals to wear away rapidly. Causes caves.
Carbonic Acid Forms from CO2 dissolving in water, then weathers marble and limestone
Living Organisms Plants produce weak acid that slowly dissolve rock that surround roots
Oxygen Oxidation (when water is combined with iron) produces rust on some rocks
Two important factors that determine the rate at which weathering occurs type of rock and the climate
Climate refers to the average weather conditions in an area. BOTH types of weathering occur faster in WET climates.
Type of Rock some minerals dissolve faster than others

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
