Chapter 1 Nutrition

Nutrition The sum of all processes involved in how organisms obtain nutrients, and metabolize them to support life.
Nutritional Science The investigation of how an organism is nourished and how nourishment affects a persons health population and planetary health.
Health A state of complete physical, mental & social well being.
Disease Any abnormal condition that affects health of an organism and is characterized by specific signs & symptoms.
Health Promotion The process of enabling people to increase control over and improve their health.
Disease Prevention Taking steps to reduce the risk of getting sick and spreading germs.
What 4 nutrients does the body needed to function. Carbohydrates, Proteins, Water Lipids.
Lipids A family of organic compounds composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Not dissolvable in water, organic compounds triglycerides
The 3 main types of lipids are Triglycerides, phospholipids, and sterols
Proteins Macromolecules composed of chains of organic monomeric subunits. Called amino Acids
Water Composed of 2 hydrogens and 1 oxygen per molecule of water. 60% of the body is water
water Person can survive 3 minutes without oxygen, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food.
Carbohydrates Organic molecules made up of cardon, hydrogen and oxygen. Carbs can be categorized as sugars, starches, and fiber.
What are 2 basic forms of Carbs Simple sugars and Complex sugars
What are the 6 classes of nutrients that the body needs to function. Carbs, Proteins, Water, Vitamins, Lipids, and minerals
Macronutrients Large nutrients that are needed in large amounts
One Gram of carbs yields four kilocalories For the cells in the body to preform work.
What year did the US federal government develop a diet-related public policy designed to equip Americans with the tools to change to a healthier diet? 1980's
What are Fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E,C,K (A) vision, reproduction, immune support (D) Bone, teeth, immune support (E) Antioxidant ,cell membrane, support and protects the skin, (K) Bone, teeth, clotting factor
Scientific Method A organized process of inquiry that involves making an observation and coming up with a hypothesis, conducting tests from that hypothesis, evaluating the results, gathering supporting evidence and coming up with a conclusion.
What are some examples of simple carbs Fruit juice honey. Simple cards are easy to digest and provides quick energy. Which causes glucose to go up faster.
What are some examples of Complex carbs. Brown rice, lentils, apples and beans. complex cards provide more fiber which takes longer to digest & cause blood glucose to go up slower.
Glycogen Cards that is stored in the liver/ muscle and is break down and released in the blood stream.
Fiber provides increase in bacterial growth for the colon , Helps soften and bulk up the stools for easier defecation. Helps to stabilize blood sugar levels.

pellagra A disease caused by deficiency in Niacin . Can cause Diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia.
Nutrient Density One measurement of food quality is the amount of essential nutrients a food contains relative to the amount of energy it has .
