Tectonics

7th Grade Unit 17

TermDefinition
Pangaea a supercontinent that existed millions of years ago, made up of all the continents on Earth
Tectonic Plates large, solid slabs of rock that move slowly across the Earth's surface
Convection Currents a circular movement of fluid (like air or molten rock) caused by differences in temperature, where warmer, less dense material rises and cooler, denser material sinks, creating a continuous cycle of movement
Divergent Boundary a place where two tectonic plates move apart, creating a gap that can be filled with magma
Convergent Boundary a place where two tectonic plates move towards each other and collide
Transform Boundary a place where two tectonic plates slide past each other horizontally
Continental Crust the relatively thick part of the earth's crust that forms the large landmasses
Oceanic Crust the outermost layer of Earth's lithosphere that's found under the oceans. It's made of dense, dark-colored rocks like basalt and gabbro
Subduction Zones a region where two tectonic plates meet and one plate is forced beneath the other
Seafloor Spreading a geologic process in which tectonic plates—large slabs of Earth's lithosphere—split apart from each other
Mid-Ocean Ridges a chain of underwater volcanoes that runs along the ocean floor, created by tectonic plates moving apart
Ocean Basin (trench) a large, bowl-shaped depression in the Earth's surface that is filled with salt water and separated from the continents

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
