| compound sentence | two COMPLETE sentences joined by a COMMA and then a FANBOY (I love pizza, but I love ice cream more!) |
| complex sentence | a dependent clause and an independent clause separated by a comma (While we were away, the cat escaped from the house. ) |
| synonym | words with the SAME meaning |
| antonyms | words with the OPPOSITE meaning |
| thoughtshot | what a character is saying in his/her head - internal dialogue |
| flashback | when an author goes back in time |
| dialogue | when characters speak OUT LOUD - external dialogue |
| simile | comparing two unlike objects using LIKE or AS (She was as slow as a sloth!) |
| metaphor | direct comparison of two objects (He was a ninja sneaking into the classroom.) |
| hyperbole | exaggeration (I told you one billion times to do your homework.) |
| personification | giving human traits to objects (I could hear the table cry when its leg broke.) |
| alliteration | multiple words with the same beginning sound/letter - a tongue twister (Mary munched on marshmallows on Monday.) |
| conflict | the problem in a story |
| climax | the turning point in the story - the moment where you are on the edge of your seat! |
| resolution | when the problem is solved |
| exposition | the beginning of story when the setting and characters are introduced |
| adjective | a word that describes a noun (a RED apple, the LOUD music) |
| noun | a person, place, thing or idea |
| verb | an action word |
| contrast | show differences of two things |
| compare | show the similiarities of two things |
| free verse | poetry without rhyme or rhythm |
| genre | a category of literature |
| homographs | same spelling with different meaning (bow- to bend, bow - a knot) |
| homophones | sound the same but with different meaning (too, to, two) |
| idioms | expression has meaning different from the words (go to the dogs) - NOT LITERAL |
| imagery | words and phrases that appeal to reader's senses |
| inference | logical guess based on the evidence - text + brain = CONCLUSION |
| mood | feelings that a piece of text gives to the reader |
| onomatopoeia | words whose sound suggests meaning (buzz, sizzle) |
| paraphrase | restate information in one's own words |
| plot | sequence of events that make up a story |
| point of view | perspective of a story (who is telling it and how they see it) |
| setting | time and place |
| summary | retelling a piece of writing in one's own words without unimportant details |
| theme | life lesson that is taught through a text |
| verse | a line of poetry |
| stanza | a group of lines in poetry |
| persuasive essay | writing tries to influence the reader in some way |
| evidence based terms | words or phrases that MUST introduce evidence |
| evidence | words from the text used to PROVE an answer or support a response - these MUST be from the text |
| elaboration | when you EXPLAIN the evidence - be sure to connect it to the question being asked |
