Unit 7 - Cells, Inheritance, and Survival

Cell membrane outer membrane that controls what goes in and out of the cell, made up of 2 layers. both plant/animal
cell wall strong and rigid wall that supports and protects the cell. outermost layer. ONLY plant
Nucleus the control center of the cell + contains all the cell's genetic material. directs the cell's activities. both plant/animal
cytoplasm the cellular fluid that makes up that all other organelles are suspended on. 80% water + rest are fats, proteins, carbonhydrates, + salts. both plant/animals
ribosomes make proteins. either free-floating or attached to rough ER. both have it
mitochondria the "powerhouse" of the cell, makes cell's energy (ATP) using celluar respiration. both animal/plant
lysosomes contain enzymes to break down damaged organelles, waste, and invaders in the cell. ONLY animal
Vacuoles storage in the cell. in animal cells they store food + water and help with waste removal, and are temporary. bigger in plants. in BOTH
Chloroplast contain cholophyll which makes plants green. responsible for photosynthesis. PLANTS only
