Definitions and words-benchmark one

QuestionAnswer
magma A mixture of molten rock and gases located below Earth's surface.
lava A mixture of molten rock and gases located above Earth's surface.
sediment small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks breaking down through weathering or erosion.
igneous rock Rock that forms from magma (intrusive) or lava (extrusive).
crust The rocky outer layer of the Earth.
mantle A thick layer of hot, solid rock beneath the Earth's crust.
core The dense circular area at the center of the Earth; made mostly of nickel and iron.
lithosphere A layer of cool, rigid rock that includes the upper part of the mantle and the Earth's crust.
asthenosphere A layer of softer, weaker rock that is below the lithosphere. It flows slowly.
rock cycle A series of processes (weathering, erosion, heat and pressure) that change rocks from one type to another.
sedimentary rock Rock that forms over time as sediment is squeezed and cemented together.
metamorphic rock Rock that has been changed by temperature or pressure.
