Cardiac cycle

Cardiac cycle process, AV & SA nodes, systole and diastole

QuestionAnswer
What is the Cardiac cycle? One complete sequence of blood filling and emptying from the heart
How is the cardiac cycle controlled? By the pacemaker, SA & AV nodules.
What is Diastole? The period of relaxation when the heart fills
What is Systole? The period of time when the heart contracts and empties
Where is the SA-sinoatrial node located? In the wall of the right atrium
Where is the AV-atrioventricular node located? Located in the septum between the right atrium and the right ventricle.
What are the nodes made of? Made up of nervous tissue (purkinjie fibres)
Where does the SA node send and impulse to? Sends an impulse to the atria
Where does the AV node send an impulse to? Sends an impulse to the ventricles.
Cardiac cycle process From the atria to the ventricles 1. Blood enters the atria (diastole) 2. The SA node sends an impulse to the atria and they contract (systole) 3. Bicuspid and tricuspid valves open. 4. Blood is pumped into the ventricles which are relaxed. (Diastole)
Cardiac cycle process From the ventricles to the pulmonary artery and aorta 5. The AV node sends an impulse to the ventricles and they contract (systole). 6 bicuspid & tricuspid valves close. Semilunar valves open. 7. Blood is pumped to the pulmonary artery and aorta
