GENETICS Ch 2

QuestionAnswer
Which of the following is not found in a prokaryotic cell? a. Plasma Membrane b. Ribosome c. Cell nucelus d. Cytoplasm c. Cell nucleus
How many sets of chromosomes are in a human somatic cell, and how many chromosomes are in each set? 2 sets of chromosomes, with 23 chromosomes in each set
When preparing a karyotype, what steps are involved? Treating the cells with a chemical to start cell division. Using a hypotonic solution to make the cells swell. Applying chemical dyes to bind to and stain the chromosomes.
What is the difference between homologs & sister chromatids? Homologs are chromosome pairs, 1 from your mom & 1 from your dad, that have similar genes. Chromatids are copies of a chromosome made during DNA replication, & the 2 chromatids in a pair are exactly the same.
What is the function of the FtsZ protein during binary fission? FtsZ filaments form a ring where the cell will divide and attract other proteins to build a cell wall between the two new daughter cells.
Binary fission is... a. Form of sexual reproduction b. Way for bacteria to reproduce c. Begins w/ a single mother cell & produces 2 genetically identical daugther cells d. All of the above d. All of the Above
Which of the following is the correct order of phases of the eukaryotic cell cycle? a. G1, G2, S, M b. G1, S, G2, M c. G1, G2, M, S d. G1, S, M, G2 b. G1, S, G2, M
During which phase of the eukaryotic cell cycle does DNA replication occur? DNA replication occurs in the S (Synthesis) phase
What happens during the G1 phase of the eukaryotic cell cycle? The cell grows, carries out normal functions & prepares for DNA replication
What is the purpose of the G2 phase? The G2 phase allows the cell to grow further & check for any DNA damage before entering mitosis (M phase)
What occurs during the M phase of the eukaryotic cell cycle? The M phase involves mitosis, where the cell divides its nucleus & cytokinesis, where the cytoplasm splits to form 2 daughter cells.
In which phase does the cell spend the most time? The cell spends the most time in the G1 phase, which if part of interphase
What is the role of checkpoints in the eukaryotic cell cycle? Checkpoints ensure the cell is ready to proceed to the next phase by checking for DNA damage, proper replication & correct chromosome alignment

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
