Melody The main tune of the song
What is melodic contour? The shape of the melody
Riff A riff is a repeated chord or melodic progression or refrain in pop, rock and jazz
Chord A chord with 3 notes played simultaneously
Complex chord Chords with more than three different types of notes. E.g. 7ths, (4 notes) 9ths, (5 notes)
The scale commonly used in Jazz and early Rock Songs Blues scale
Ostinato a repeated pattern
Pentatonic 5 note scale often used in cultural music and Jazz and Rock
Broken Chords Where the notes in the chord are played separately
Pitch Highness and Lowness of notes
Duration Length of notes, Time Signatures and Tempos, Rhythms
Timbre The unique sound of an instrument eg Bright Trumpet
Structure The sections of music eg in a pop song verse chorus form
Performing Media The instruments that perform
Texture If a piece is thin (sparse) minimal layers , thick (dense) many layers like an orchestra piece.
Tempo Speed of the Music, and changes in speed usually used Italian words
Dynamics Louds and Softs and Crescendos getting louder and Decrescendo getting softer
Percussion Family Instruments that can be hit or shaken (idiophones)
String Family Instruments that have strings
Brass Family Instruments that have valves and slides
Woodwind Instruments that have reeds and or edge tone and keys
Conductor To keep the performers in time, change the tempo and control the dynamics and expression
Orchestra Made up of the 4 families of the Orchestra, Brass, Woodwind, String and Percussion plays a variety of styles including film music.
Rock Music Consists on a rock band, verse chorus and solo/instrumental/bridge
Verse A section in a song that tells the story
Chorus A section that is repeated in the song tells the main information and is usually my dynamic and vibrant than the verse
Bridge A contrasting section in a song that happens after the verse and chorus
Solo A section where an instrument features by playing a more virtuosic part. (Showing off)
Instrumental Where instruments have a turn at demonstrating their skills
Score Conductors use the score to read the music of the orchestra
Note Values Duration of notes like minims crotchets or quavers
Quaver 1/2 a beat
Minim 2 beats
Semibreve 4 beats
Crotchet 1 beat
Rest Slilence in music
Crotchet rest 1 beat
Quaver Rest 1/2 beat
Semibreve Rest 4 beats
Semiquaver 1/4 of a beat
Semiquaver Rest 1/4 of a beat
Common Time 4/4 time signature
3/4 time 3 beats in a bar (Waltz time)
2/4 Two beats in a bar
Time signature Tells you how many beats in a bar and the type
Treble clef Tells you the higher pitched notes notes instrument like flute and soprano voice
Bass Clef tells you the lower notes eg bass guitar
Names of Notes on the spaces in the treble F A C E
Names of Notes on the lines E G B D F (every good boy deserves fruit)
Names of the Spaces in the bass Clef A C E G ( all cows eat grass)

Motive A short theme used in music (shorter than a melody)
12 bar blues A popular chord progession used in blues music and Jazz using the Chords I IV and V
