Analyze the interactions that occur among body systems.

TermDefinition
Organ systems A group of organs that works together to perform a specific body function. There are 11 organ systems in the human body.
Homeostasis Steady balance of water, nutrients, energy and other cellular and physiological processes in the body.
Feedback loop An internal body process that regulates and maintains homeostasis and is controlled by the nervous system and the endocrine system.
Negative feedback Involves responses that reverse change. Example: Regulating body temperature.
Positive feedback Involves responses that reinforce, or amplify, change. The end products of positive feedback increase the response. Example: childbirth contractions.
Hormone Is a chemical messenger that is produced by the endocrine system and helps to regulate specific process in the human body. Examples of hormones: estrogens, testosterone, insulin, growth hormone.
Gland An organ that produces and releases one or more substances, such as hormones, digestive juices, sweat, tears, saliva, or milk. Endocrine glands release the substances directly into the bloodstream.
Regulation Biological process by which an organism controls its internal and external processes to adapt to changes in its environment.
