Stomata Small opening on the underside of the leaf through which oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide can move
Transpiration The process by which water is lost through a plant’s leaves
Embryo The young organism that develops from a zygote. #2 A developing human during the first eight weeks after fertilization has occurred
Germination The sprouting of the embryo out of a seed; occurs when the embryo resumes its growth following dormancy
Flower The reproductive structure of an angiosperm
Pollination The transfer of pollen from male reproductive structures to female reproductive structures in plants
Describe the 3 functions of roots Roots anchor a plant in the ground, absorb water and minerals from the soil, and sometimes store food
Describe the 2 functions of stems The stem carries substances between the plant’s roots and leaves. The stem also provides support for the plant and holds up the leaves so they are exposed to the sun
Describe the function of leaves Leaves capture the suns energy and carry out the food-making process of photosynthesis
Describe the three basic parts of a seed A seed has three main parts-an embryo, stored food, and a seed coat
Three ways a seed can be dispersed By: animals digestive system, any state of water, and on barblike structures that hook onto clothing
Know and be able to label the structures of a flower A typical flower contains sepals, petals, stamens, and pistils
Know what each part of the flower does Sepals: protect the developing flower and are often in green color Petals: a colorful, leaflike structure of some flowers Stamen: the male reproductive part of a flower Pistil: the female reproductive part of a flower
