Nosocomial disease A disease received in a hospital
Null hypothesis No association between disease and exposure
Fomite Object that can transmit disease
Vector An animal that carries disease causing agents and can transfer them to humans
Active surveillance Hospitals actively looking for specific cases of a disease
Passive surveillance Hospitals not actively looking for cases of a SPECIFIC disease
Type 1 error A scientist rejects a null hypothesis that turns out to be true
Type 2 error A scientist fails to reject a null hypothesis
Pandemic An epidemic occuring over multiple continents or countries
Epidemic High cases of a disease over a wide geographical area
Endemic Constant levels of a disease in an area
Hyperendemic Constant high levels of a disease in an area
Hypoendemic Constant low level of a disease in an area
Outbreak More occurrences of disease cases then expected
Zoonosis A disease that can be transmitted to from animals to humans
Risk Probability that a person will be affected
Cluster A group of cases regarding a specific disease close in location or time
