Natural Resources

TermDefinition
Natural Resources Materials from the Earth used by living things, such as air, water, and plants
Renewable Resources Resources that can be replaced naturally in a short time, like sunlight or wind
Nonrenewable Resources Resources that cannot be replaced or take a very long time to form, like coal or oil
Conservation The careful use and protection of natural resources to avoid wasting them
Sustainability The ability to use resources in a way that they will not run out for future generations
Fossil Fuels Energy sources formed from ancient plants and animals, such as coal, oil, and natural gas
Solar Energy Energy that comes from the Sun, which is a renewable resource
Wind Energy Energy produced by the movement of air, captured by wind turbines
Hydroelectric Energy Energy produced from moving water, such as from rivers or dams
Geothermal Energy Heat energy from beneath the Earth’s surface, used for heating and power generation
Biomass Organic material from plants and animals used to create energy, like wood or crop waste
Recycling The process of turning old materials into new products to reduce waste and save resources
Pollution Harmful substances added to the environment, often from using nonrenewable resources
Erosion The wearing away of land by wind, water, or other natural forces, often caused by human activities
Carbon Footprint The amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere from using energy and resources
Wind Turbine A machine that converts wind energy into electricity
Solar Panel A device that collects sunlight and converts it into electricity
Natural Gas A fossil fuel used for heating and cooking, considered a nonrenewable resource
Coal A solid fossil fuel used for electricity generation, which takes millions of years to form
Oil A liquid fossil fuel used for energy and transportation, also nonrenewable
Forest A large area covered mainly with trees, which are renewable resources
Aquifer An underground layer of water-bearing rock, a natural resource of freshwater
Sustainability Practices Actions taken to preserve resources for the future, such as using less plastic and recycling
Deforestation The cutting down of trees, which harms ecosystems and reduces the availability of renewable resources like wood
Resource Management The careful planning and use of natural resources to make sure they last for future generations
Water Energy Energy that comes from moving water, like rivers or ocean waves (often referred to as hydropower)
Disposal The process of getting rid of waste materials, especially in an environmentally safe way
Energy Resources Materials like coal, oil, wind, water, and sunlight that are used to produce energy
Environment The natural world, including land, air, water, and all living things
Impact The effect something has on the environment, such as how energy use can affect air quality
Fossil Fuels Nonrenewable resources like coal, oil, and natural gas that are formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals
Physical Properties Characteristics of materials that can be observed, like color, texture, or how hard something is
Rocks Solid materials that make up the Earth's crust and can store natural resources like oil and gas
Sustainability Using resources in a way that does not deplete them, so they are available for future generations
Environmental Impact The effect that human activities, such as energy use or resource extraction, have on the natural environment, including air, water, land, and ecosystems
Mineral A naturally occurring substance that makes up rocks, usually formed through geological processes
Igneous Rock A type of rock that forms from cooled and solidified lava or magma
Sedimentary Rock A type of rock formed by the accumulation and compression of sediment over time
Metamorphic Rock A type of rock that forms when existing rocks are subjected to heat and pressure
Magma Molten rock beneath the Earth’s surface
Lava Molten rock that reaches the Earth’s surface during a volcanic eruption
Fossils The preserved remains or traces of ancient living organisms, often found in sedimentary rocks
Strata Layers of rock that build up over time, usually seen in sedimentary rock formations
Erosion The process of weathering down and removing materials from the Earth's surface, often carried by water, wind, or ice
Weathering The breakdown of rocks into smaller particles due to environmental factors like wind, water, and temperature changes
Storage The process of keeping or preserving natural resources in a safe or accessible place
Geology The study of the Earth, including its structure, materials, and the processes that have shaped it
Deposit A natural accumulation of minerals, oils, or other resources found in a particular area
Permeability the ability of a soil to allow water to move though it
Porosity the amount of empty space in a material

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
