Introduction to Earth Science

| hypothesis | a possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question |
| data | facts, figures, and measurements |
| a hypothesis | must be testable |
| variables | the factors which must be controlled so that researchers can draw a logical conclusion |
| manipulated or independent variable | the variable that is purposely changed during an experiment |
| data table | an organized way to collect and record scientific observations |
| graph | a useful tool that may help a scientist interpret data by revealing unexpected patterns |
| conclusion | a summary of what you have learned from a scientific experiment |
| theory | a well-tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results |
| scientific law | a statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions |
| astronomy | the branch of science that includes the study of stars |
| observing | using one or more of you r senses to gather information |
| inferring | when you explain or interpret the things you observe |
| destructive force | a force that slowly wears a way mountains and other features on the surface of Earth |
| meteorologists | scientists who study weather and climate |
| technology | how people change the world around them to meet their needs or to solve practical problems |
| engineer | a person who is trained to use both technology and scientific knowledge to solve practical problems |
