Unit 5 Science Vocab

TermDefinition
earth's crust The outermost layer of the Earth that we live on and is made up of solid rock.
inner core The very center of the Earth made of solid metal
asthenosphere A soft
mantle The thick layer of rock beneath the crust that is hot and moves slowly.
outer core The liquid layer of metal beneath the mantle that surrounds the inner core.
core The central part of the Earth
lithosphere The rigid outer layer of the Earth that includes the crust and the upper mantle.
continental drift The theory that Earth's continents have moved over time.
Pangea A supercontinent that existed millions of years ago when all the continents were joined together.
fossils The preserved remains or traces of plants
density A measure of how much mass is in a given space or volume.
theory of plate tectonics The idea that Earth's crust is made up of large plates that move over time.
transform boundary A place where two tectonic plates slide past each other.
earthquakes Vibrations in the Earth caused by the movement of tectonic plates.
convection currents The movement of hot material rising and cool material sinking inside the Earth
convergent boundary A place where two tectonic plates move toward each other.
faults Cracks in the Earth's crust where movement has occurred.
Richter scale A tool used to measure the strength of an earthquake.
seafloor spreading The process where new ocean floor is created at mid-ocean ridges as tectonic plates move apart.
divergent boundary A place where two tectonic plates move away from each other.
seismic waves Vibrations that travel through the Earth
