| asthenosphere | A soft |
| mantle | The thick layer of rock beneath the crust that is hot and moves slowly. |
| outer core | The liquid layer of metal beneath the mantle that surrounds the inner core. |
| core | The central part of the Earth |
| lithosphere | The rigid outer layer of the Earth that includes the crust and the upper mantle. |
| continental drift | The theory that Earth's continents have moved over time. |
| Pangea | A supercontinent that existed millions of years ago when all the continents were joined together. |

| density | A measure of how much mass is in a given space or volume. |
| theory of plate tectonics | The idea that Earth's crust is made up of large plates that move over time. |
| transform boundary | A place where two tectonic plates slide past each other. |
| earthquakes | Vibrations in the Earth caused by the movement of tectonic plates. |
| convection currents | The movement of hot material rising and cool material sinking inside the Earth |
| convergent boundary | A place where two tectonic plates move toward each other. |
| faults | Cracks in the Earth's crust where movement has occurred. |
| Richter scale | A tool used to measure the strength of an earthquake. |
| seafloor spreading | The process where new ocean floor is created at mid-ocean ridges as tectonic plates move apart. |
| divergent boundary | A place where two tectonic plates move away from each other. |
| seismic waves | Vibrations that travel through the Earth |
