| Term | Definition |

| Energy | the ability to do work of cause change. |
| Kinetic energy | Energy that an object has because of it's motion. |
| Potential energy | the energy an object has because of it's position; also the internal stored energy of an object |
| gravitational potential energy | potential energy that depends on the height of an object |
| Elastic potential energy | the energy associated with objects that can be compressed or stretched |
| mechanical energy | the form of energy associated with the motion, position, or shape of an object |
| Nuclear energy | stored in the nucleus of an atom; energy is released during a nuclear reaction |
| thermal energy | the total energy of the motion of all the particles of an object |
| Electrical energy | the energy of electric charges |
| chemical energy | the potential energy stored in chemical bonds; found in the foods we eat and in our body’s cells |
| Electromagnetic energy | a form of energy that travels through space in waves |
| Energy transfer | a change from one form of energy to another |
| Law of conservation of energy | states that when one form of energy is transformed to another, no energy is lost in the process |
| Exothermic energy | a change in which energy is given off; energy is released |
| Endothermic | a change in which energy is absorbed (taken in) |
