Compositional, melodic, harmonic features & techniques

TermDefinition
Sequence Composition A musical idea that is immediately repeated in a higher or lower pitch
Inversion Composition The intervals of a melody are turned upside down
Imitation Composition When different instruments or voices repeat a melody
Antiphonal dialogue Composition When two or more groups of musicians/singers play/sing alternately, one answering the other. (Call and response)
Repeated notes Melody The repeated use of a note at the same pitch over and over again in a melody
Ornamentation Melody Musical decorations or extra notes added to a melody or accompaniment to add interest and variety
Scalic movement Melody A melody or musical passage that moves up or down a scale often creating a scale.
Canon Composition Where a melody is imitated at a fixed distance
Chromaticism Melody The use of notes outside of a give key signature, creating a more complex and varied sound.
Broken chords Harmony A type of chord in which the notes are played or sung one after the other rather than simultaneously
Block chords Harmony A type of chord in which all notes are played simultaneously rather than broken up.
