Thermal and Electric
6th Grade Science Thermal and Electric Energy Vocabulary, Mrs. Nieto
| Term | Defenition |
|---|---|
| Thermal/Heat Energy | The measure of kinetic energy (movement of particles) within a system. |
| Heat Transfer | Heat moving from a warmer object to a cooler object. |
| Conduction | The direct transfer of heat between objects that touch. |
| Convection | The transfer of heat through movement of fluids - liquids or gasses. |
| Radiation | The transfer of heat by waves. Ex. Sun's rays or microwaves heating your food. |
| Conductor | A material that allows heat and electricity to pass through it. Ex. metals: cooper, silver, steel |
| Insulator | A material that does not allow heat or electricity to move through it easily. Ex. plastic, rubber, wood, paper, fabric |
| Temperature | The degree of hotness or coldness of an object; the average amount of kinetic energy in particles of matter. |
| Thermometer | A tool/instrument used to measure temperature. |
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Atom/Particle | Smallest unit of matter. Building blocks of matter. |
| Kinetic Theory of Matter | The idea that all matter is made up of tiny particles in constant motion. |
| Electrical Energy | Energy caused by the movement of electrons. |
| Electron | Part of the atom with a negative charge found in the space outside the center of an atom. |
| Circuit | The path that an electric current travels along. |
| Electrical Current | Flow of charged electrons from one point to another. |
| Open Circuit | An incomplete electrical circuit in which no current flows. |
| Closed Circuit | A complete circuit through which electricity flows. |
| Series Circuit | An circuit with only one path for current flow. |
| Parallel Circuit | A circuit that contains more than one path for current flow. |
