Earth's Layers 1

6th Grade Science: Unit 5 - Earth's Layers

QuestionAnswer
What is the Crust? the Earth's outer skin
What is the Lithosphere? Beneath the Crust and a part of the upper Mantle. This is the layer that we walk on every day.
What is the Mantle? a thick layer of hot rock.
What are the 2 parts of the Mantle? the upper Mantle, which is solid but can flow slowly, and the lower Mantle, which is more solid due to the high pressure.
What is the Outer core? The layer right beneath the Mantle, which is made of molten metal.
What is the Inner core? Even deeper at the center of the Earth, a solid sphere mostly made of iron and nickel.
What does the core do? The Core is extremely hot and plays a crucial role in producing Earth's magnetic field that protects us from harmful solar radiation.
What is the partially molten region between the solid Lithosphere and the flowing Mantle called? the Asthenosphere
What is the Asthenosphere? layer that allows the tectonic plates of the Earth's surface to move around slowly, causing earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the formation of mountains.
What happens to the pressure as you go towards the inside of the Earth? The deeper you go, the greater the pressure
What are the 3 main chemical layers of the Earth? crust mantle core
What layer of the Earth makes up 80% of Earth's volume? the mantle
What are the 2 parts of the Earth's core? liquid outer core and solid inner core
What are the 5 physical layers of the Earth? Lithosphere Athenosphere Mesophere Outer Core Inner Core
What part of the Earth's physical layer is divided into tectonic plates? the lithosphere
Scientists' knowledge of the Earth's interior has come primarily from what? studying seismic waves generated by earthquakes
From lowest to the highest temperatures, which is the correct order of Earth's layers? Crust, mantle, outer core, inner core
What happens in Earth's interior to produce Earth's magnetic field? The currents in the outer core spin the inner core
Most geologists think that the movement of Earth’s plates is caused by convection currents in the asthenosphere
The geological theory that states that pieces of Earth’s lithosphere are in constant, slow motion is the theory of plate tectonics
A place where two plates slip past each other, moving in opposite directions, is known as a transform boundary
The place where two plates come together is known as a convergent boundary
The layer of Earth made up largely of the rocks basalt and granite is the crust
As depth beneath Earth’s surface increases, temperature and pressure both increase
How do geologists observe Earth’s interior? by recording and studying seismic waves
What is the correct order (starting from the surface) of Earth’s layers? crust, mantle, outer core, inner core
Earth’s magnetic field results from the spinning of the inner core
Scientists think that convection currents flow in Earth’s asthenosphere
Heat is transferred within a fluid by convection currents
