| population | all the members of one species that live within an area of an ecosystem |
| producer | living things that makes its own food |
| consumer | living things that eat other living things |
| herbivore | animal that eats plants |
| carnivore | animal that gets food by eating other animals |
| omnivore | animal that eats plants and other animals |
| decomposer | organism that breaks down plant and animal waste and remains |
| food chain | the transfer of energy from one organism to another by eating and being eaten |
| food web | a system of overlapping food chains in which the flow of energy branches out in many directions |
| competition | occurs when two or more living things need the same resources in order to survive |
| fossil | the remains or mark of an animal or plant that lived long ago |
| extinct | no longer existing as a species |
| paleontologist | a scientist who studies fossils |
