consumer living things that eat other living things
herbivore animal that eats plants
carnivore animal that gets food by eating other animals
omnivore animal that eats plants and other animals
decomposer organism that breaks down plant and animal waste and remains
food chain the transfer of energy from one organism to another by eating and being eaten
food web a system of overlapping food chains in which the flow of energy branches out in many directions
competition occurs when two or more living things need the same resources in order to survive
fossil the remains or mark of an animal or plant that lived long ago
extinct no longer existing as a species
paleontologist a scientist who studies fossils
