Sun-Earth-Moon System

| constellation | groups of stars in specific patterns, such as Orion. They maintain their shape as they move through the night sky b/c the distance between any two stars stays the same |
| rotation | Earth rotates on imaginary axis running through the North & South Poles. It gives us a 24 hour day |
| orbit | the path that a celestial body (planet, moon, comet, asteroid, etc) follows as it travels around another celestial body in space. |
| phase | the change in the sunlit area of one celestial body, such as the moon, as seen from another celestial body |
| eclipse | when the shadow of one celestial body falls on another |
| umbra | the darkest, inner shadow created in an eclipse |
| penumbra | the lighter, larger shadow that is created during an eclipse. |
| solar eclipse | the shadow of the MOON falls on Earth |
| lunar eclipse | the shadow of the EARTH falls on the moon |
| total solar eclipse | when the sun appears to be completely blocked except for a bright halo of light. |
| annular solar eclipse | Earth, moon, & sun are in a straight lined, but the moon is farther away from Earth in its orbit, so the moon’s shadow does not completely cover the sun |
| partial solar eclipse | any solar eclipse that is observed from the penumbra, since from their point of view, the moon only blocks part of the sun’s light |
| total lunar eclipse | this occurs when the whole moon passes through the umbra |
| partial lunar eclipse | only part of the moon passes through the umbra |
| penumbral lunar eclipse | the moon passes through the penumbra - difficult to see |
| season | a division of the year that is associated with particular weather patterns and daylight hours |
| equinox | one of two days in the year when the hours of daylight equal the hours of darkness over Earth as a whole |
| solstice | one of two days in the year when hours of daylight and hours of darkness are at their greatest and least. |
| revolution | one orbit of an object in space around another object in space, such as the moon around Earth. |
| Earth's axis | an imaginary line that runs from its North Pole , through its center, to its South Pole. |
| Earth's tilt | Earth is tilted at 23.5 degrees |
