Natural Resources

| natural resources | materials from the environment that are used by people |
| material resources | minerals, water, plants, animals, rocks, and soil |
| energy resources | natural resources that provide people with energy |
| renewable resources | resources that are regularly replaced or replenished by nature; ex: plants, animals, water |
| nonrenewable resources | resources that can be used only once, or are not replaced by nature as quickly as they are used; ex: oil, coal, natural gas |
| fossil fuels | coal, petroleum (oil), and natural gas. they formed from the buried remains of plants and animals. |
| biomass | plant matter, such and wood or crop waste, that is burned for heat or made into biofuel. |
| biofuel | fuel made from plant matter |
| potentially renewable resource | a resource that is only renewable if it is not used too quickly or is managed |
| inexhaustible renewable resource | resources that cannot be used up by human activity |
| consequence | a result that follows naturally from the actions of a person or group |
| tradeoff | a situation that involves giving something up in return for gaining something else |
