QuestionAnswer
Ocean Current The continuous movement of ocean water in a specific direction.
Surface Current The movement of ocean water that flows at or near the surface of the ocean.
Continental Deflection When ocean currents change direction because they hit a continent.
Coriolis Effect The way Earth’s rotation makes winds and ocean currents curve instead of moving in a straight line.
Gyre A large circular system of ocean currents that move in a loop.
Density A measure of how much mass (stuff) is packed into a certain amount of space.
Salinity The amount of salt dissolved in water.
Deep Ocean Current The movement of ocean water that flows deep below the surface.
Convection Is the way heat moves through liquids and gases. It happens when warm parts of a liquid or gas rise, and cooler parts sink, creating a cycle.
Weather a description of the short term conditions of the atmosphere at a particular time and place.
Temperature a measure of how hot or cold something is.
Humidity a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air.
Air Pressure the force of air pushing on an object.
Climate the average weather conditions in an area over a long period.
Latitude the distance north or south of the equator.
Elevation the distance of a place above sea level.
Global Winds Winds that blow steadily in a specific direction.
Distance from Water Water temperatures rise and fall much slower than land and air. This causes locations near coasts to have milder climates.
Landforms The shape of the land; includes mountains, valleys, oceans, etc.
