| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| natural hazard | a natural process that may cause widespread injury, death, and property damage |
| natural disaster | widespread injury, death, and property damage caused by a natural hazard. |
| geologic hazards | hazards caused by geologic processes such as plate motion. Examples: landslides, earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions |
| weather and climate hazards | hazards caused by weather conditions and patterns. Examples: droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, severe thunderstorms, and floods |
| frequency | how often events occur |
| magnitude | how large events are |
| volcanic eruption | a geologic hazard in which molten rock, gases, ash, and other materials are released onto Earth's surface and into the atmosphere |
| supercell | rotating thunderstorms |
| The Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF Scale) | the scale that describes tornado damage |
| tsunamis | powerful ocean waves that can flood coastal areas; often caused by EARTHQUAKES |
| tornado | a rapidly spinning column of air extending from a storm cloud to the ground |
| seismometer | detects vibrations in the ground, to monitor earthquake activity. |
| tiltmeter | monitors changes in a volcano's shape that are related to pressure changes inside a volcano. |
| Ring of Fire | Area surrounding the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis can occur. |
