| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a monomer? | A monomer is a molecule that acts as a single building block. |
| What is a polymer? | A polymer is a complex structure made of multiple monomers. |
| What is a synthesis reaction? | A reaction which bonds two or more monomers together. |
| What is the function of carbohydrates? | Usable energy and structure of plant cells. |
| What are the building blocks of carbohydrates? | Simple sugars, may be single or bonded in long chains of sugars. |
| Define monosaccharide. (carb) | 1 simple sugar molecule. Examples: Glucose, fructose, "ose" means sugar. |
| Define disaccharide. (carb) | 2 sugar molecules bonded together. Examples: sucrose (table sugar). |
| Define polysaccharide. (carb) | Many sugar molecules bonded together. Examples: Starch (plants), glycogen (animals), and cellulose (plant cell walls). |
| What are the elements in carbohydrates? | Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen. (CHO) |
| What are the elements in lipids? | Carbon (mostly) , hydrogen (mostly) , oxygen (little bit). |
| What are the functions of lipids? | Long term energy storage, insulation, and membranes/protective coverings. |
| What are the building blocks of lipids? | Glycerol and fatty acid chains. |
| What is a common lipid? | Triglyceride. |
| What are examples of lipids? | Saturated fat, unsalted fat, oil, wax, steroids, most hormones. All do not mix with water. |
| What are saturated fats? | Have all single bonds in the fatty acid chains and are solids at room temp. |
| What are unsaturated fats? | Have double bonds in the fatty acid chains and are liquids at room temp. |
