Ecology

QuestionAnswer
Food Chain illustrates the transfer of energy/biomass (matter) from one organism in an ecosystem to another.
Producer (Autotroph) plants which produce food through photosynthesis.
Consumer (Heterotroph) cannot create its own food, therefore needs to eat for a source of energy.
The Law of Conservation of Energy Energy isn't created or destroyed, but it can transform.
Law of Conservation of Mass in a chemical reaction mass is neither created nor destroyed.
Energy Flow the transfer of radiant energy from the sun to chemical energy in plants and animals in an ecosystem.
Food Chain illustrates the transfer of energy/biomass (matter) from one organism in an ecosystem to another.
Vascular Plant have adaptations that allow plants to live on land. Allows plants to grow tall.
Xylem vascular tissue that brings water up the plant from the roots to the leaves. (WX)
Phloem vascular tissue that brings sugar and nutrients (food) from the leaves down and throughout the plant. (FP)
Nonvascular Plants are confined to living in wet environments and cannot grow tall.
Stoma (Stomata) a tiny opening or pore that is used for gas exchange. Mostly found on the under-surface of plant leaves.
Consumers (heterotrophs) cannot create its own food, therefore needs to eat for a source of energy.
Decomposers a heterotrophic organism, such as a soil bacterium or fungus that breaks down organic material (dead organisms and wastes organisms leave behind).
Species organisms which can mate and make fertile offspring.
Habitat the natural environmental area that a particular species of organism lives.
Niche the role or job of an organism within its environment.
Nitrogen Fixation atmospheric nitrogen is converted by "nitrogen fixing bacteria" into a usable form for plants and animals.
Greenhouse Effect using greenhouse gasses such as CO2 to trap heat on Earth.
Fossil Fuels non-renewable resources (oil, coal, natural gas) which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) chemicals used in refrigerants and aerosol products that harm the ozone layer.
Limiting Factors is anything in a population that restricts the population size
Exponential Growth population numbers increase faster and faster as time progresses.
Logistic Growth happens when a population is limited in resources and starts to decrease in size.
Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests. Causes erosion and water runoff.
Biodiversity the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.
Acid Rain Caused by sulfates in factory smoke getting into the atmosphere and condensing to form acidic rain.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
