| act of commission | deliberate and intentional - include physical, sexual, and emotional abuse |
| act of omission | aka - neglect - occurs when a child's basic physical, emotional, or educational needs are not met or when a child is not protected from harm - include physical, emotional, medical/dental, educational, inadequate supervision, exposure to violence. |
| crisis situation | a situation that puts stress on a family with a violent family member. |
| economic abuse | controlling a person's access to economic resources, making an individual financially dependent |
| emotional abuse | the undermining of a person's self-worth. May include criticism, humiliating, dimishing one's abilities, name calling, intimidating, isolating, and damaging relationships with others. |
| family violence | aka - domestic violence - any form of abuse, mistreatment, or neglect that a child or adult experiences from a family member |
| neglect | the failure to provide for physical, emotional, educational, and medical needs |
| perpetrator | any member of a household who is violent toward another member, such as parents, partners, siblings, and extended family members |
| physical abuse | the infliction of physical pain or bodily harm such as slapping, punching, hitting, choking, pushing, restraining, biting, throwing, or burning |
| primary prevention | measures taken to prevent the occurence of abuse |
| safety plan | a plan for rapid escape when abuse recurs |
| secondary prevention | early intervention in abusive situation to minimize thier disabling or long-term effects |
| sexual abuse | any form of sexual contact or exposure without consent or in circumstances in which the victim is incapable of giving consent. aka - sexual assault or rape |
| shelters or safe houses | a place where people can go to hide, take refuge, or live in secret |
| survivor | individual is in the recovery/healing process following victimization |
| tertiary prevention | involves nurses facilitating the healing and rehabilitative process by counseling, providing support groups, and assisting survivors of violence to achieve optimal level of safety, health and well being - often occurs in mental health settings |
| vulnerable person | the family member upon whom abuse is perpetrated |
