Well Log Diagram Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Well Log A detailed record of the geologic formations penetrated by a borehole.
Sediment Particles of rock and mineral that have been eroded and deposited by wind, water, or ice.
Porosity The percentage of void space in a rock or sediment. It measures how much water a material can hold.
Permeability The ability of a rock or sediment to allow water to flow through it.
Water Table The upper surface of the saturated zone in an aquifer, below which the ground is completely saturated with water.
Well Casing A pipe installed in a borehole to maintain the well opening and protect groundwater from contamination.
Static Water Level The level of water in a well when the pump is not operating.
Permeable Allowing liquids or gases to pass through easily.
Semi-Permeable Allowing some liquids or gases to pass through, but not as easily as permeable materials.
Impermeable Not allowing liquids or gases to pass through.
Groundwater Water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock.
Borehole A narrow shaft drilled in the ground, either vertically or horizontally.
Soil The upper layer of earth in which plants grow, usually consisting of a mixture of organic remains, clay, and rock particles.
Bedrock The solid rock beneath loose deposits such as soil or alluvium.
Aquifer An underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock or sediment from which groundwater can be extracted.
