Well Log Diagram Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Well Log | A detailed record of the geologic formations penetrated by a borehole. |
| Sediment | Particles of rock and mineral that have been eroded and deposited by wind, water, or ice. |
| Porosity | The percentage of void space in a rock or sediment. It measures how much water a material can hold. |
| Permeability | The ability of a rock or sediment to allow water to flow through it. |
| Water Table | The upper surface of the saturated zone in an aquifer, below which the ground is completely saturated with water. |
| Well Casing | A pipe installed in a borehole to maintain the well opening and protect groundwater from contamination. |
| Static Water Level | The level of water in a well when the pump is not operating. |
| Permeable | Allowing liquids or gases to pass through easily. |
| Semi-Permeable | Allowing some liquids or gases to pass through, but not as easily as permeable materials. |
| Impermeable | Not allowing liquids or gases to pass through. |
| Groundwater | Water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock. |
| Borehole | A narrow shaft drilled in the ground, either vertically or horizontally. |
| Soil | The upper layer of earth in which plants grow, usually consisting of a mixture of organic remains, clay, and rock particles. |
| Bedrock | The solid rock beneath loose deposits such as soil or alluvium. |
| Aquifer | An underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock or sediment from which groundwater can be extracted. |
