What are examples of Flatworms? Planaria, Fluke & Tapeworms
Do they have a Coelom? Acoelomate, no fluid filled cavity
What body type & symmetry do they have? Bilateral symmetry and unsegmented body
Where do Flatworms live? Live in aquatic environments like streams, lakes & oceans
Is there Cephalization? Starting to show Cephalization
How many germ layers do Flatworm have? 3 germ layers - ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm
What does RESPIRATION look like in Flatworms? Still depend on diffusion through body wall
What does NERVOUS SYSTEM look like in flatworms? Ganglia: has 2 nerve cords that are one the ventral side, Sensory cells and has 2 eye spots sensitive to light
What are some classes of Flatworms? Class: Turbellaria (Planaria), Trematoda ( Sheep liver fluke), Cestoda (tapeworms)
Where do Flatworms in class : Turbellaria live? Most are marine, some are in freshwater or terrestrial
How does EXCRETION work in class: Turbellaria? (incomplete digestive system) Waste removed by flame cells--> collects in tubules-->exits through pores on body
What does INGESTION/DIGESTION look like in class: Turbellaria? 1. Mouth allows pharynx to be extended 2. Pharynx inserts into prey 3. Secretes enzymes to break down food 4. Food particles Arte sucked up by pharynx 5. digestion happens in Gastrovascular cavity 6. Undigested food leaves through pharynx
What does REPRODUCTION look like in class Turbellaria? Asexual: regenerate missing head or tail Sexual: Trade sperm with each other, fertilization happens internally, zygote is released into water.
Are worms in class: Trematoda free living or Parasitic? What are some characterisitics? they are parasitic worms with suckers, infecting blood and organs, one or more hosts
What is the life cycle of a worm in class: Trematoda? 1. Bird eats worm and its released in their feces 2. snail eats worm then releases it in their feces 3. Fish eats the worm and it affects fish behaviour (to be eaten) 4. Bird eats fish
Are worms in class: Cestoda free living or Parasitic? What are some characteristics? they are parasitic worms with head called Scolex (suckers/hooks), incomplete digestive, excretory, nervous system,
What does reproduction look like in class: Cestoda? Reproductive organs (m+f) are in segments called Proglottids, proglottids break off containing fertilized eggs. (Have protective cuticle)
What makes PLATYHELMINTHES unique to other worms? free living or parasitic, have flame cells, regenerate missing parts
