Geoscience vocab

A stack to help you learn and study about Geoscience.

TermDefinition
Rock Cycle the processes that create, destroy, and transform Earth’s rock
weathering exposing rock to air, water and ice to break it down chemically and mechanically
erosion the process by which gravity, water, wind and ice remove and transport sediment from one place to another
deposition the process by which gravity, water, wind and ice deposit weathered and relocated sediment
sediment Earth material that is broken down by processes of weathering and can be eroded
sedimentation the process of particles settling to the bottom of a body of water
deformation change of the shape or size of an object due to physical forces or temperature change
surface feature distinctive part, quality or characteristic of Earth’s outer layer
crystallization the formation of highly ordered solid structures from particles in a solution
Geoscience Processes any natural process that happens to Earth’s surface such as weathering, erosion, or plate tectonics
erosional features Earth’s surface which shows evidence of the natural processes of weathering and the removal and relocation of weathered materials
water cycle the constant movement of water through the land, air, oceans, and living things
atmosphere the layer of gas surrounding a planet that is held in place by gravity
evaporation change of a liquid to a vapor or gas
precipitation rain , sleet, snow or hail that falls from clouds in the sky
percolation when water soaks into the ground and moves downward through spaces in soil and rocks
transpiration the process by which plants lose water (water vapor) through the stomata in their leaves
condensation the change from a gas state to a liquid state
runoff rainfall or surface water that drains or flows from the land into streams, rivers, lakes and oceans
ground water water that collects in cracks and pores in underground soil and rock layers

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
